Department of tourism and hotel industry

On June 26, 2008, the Academic Council of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University decided to create the Department of Tourism. Since 2010, the Department of Tourism has been renamed to the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry.

During the period of its existence, the department has become an important center of training specialists for the service sector in the region. The training of students at the department is carried out in accordance with the concept of graduate training of specialists in higher education, educational and qualification characteristics, educational and professional programs and curricula in the specialties 242 "Tourism" and 241 "Hotel and Restaurant Business" of the field of knowledge "Hospitality Industry" of the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels of education.

The task of the department is to train qualified staff capable of supporting the tourism and hotel and restaurant business, to promote more efficient use of human resources in the recreational, tourism and hotel and restaurant industry, to increase their professional and social mobility, the ability to ensure the structural and technological restructuring of the industry, the formation of a creative, socially active, spiritually rich personality, taking into account his/her interests, needs and demands of society and the state.

The Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry aims to creatively develop the accumulated scientific and methodological potential and train of a new formation for the hospitality industry, which combine deep theoretical knowledge with practical skills of effective work in a complex and dynamic competitive environment. The task of the team is to improve the methodological support of the educational process in accordance with the standards of the European Education Area and to establish scientific and educational international contacts.

Recreational and tourism issues are a priority area of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry research work. Employees of the department are involved in the implementation of the state budget and economic contractual topics, programs devoted to the study of natural resource potential, recreation and tourism, hotel and restaurant business in the North-Western region of Ukraine, substantiation of the functional and territorial structure of the recreational and tourist complex, solving actual problems of market restructuring of the industry and recreational nature management, substantiation of constructive and geographical foundations of balanced development of recreation in Volyn and rational management of the tourist and recreational process.

Head of the Scientific School of General and Regional Lake Studies. He launched new areas of constructive geography - ecological lake science and constructive limnology. He prepared 3 Candidates of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). His scientific activity is related to the assessment of natural recreational and tourist resources, comprehensive study of natural (lakes) and artificial (reservoirs, ponds) water bodies of Ukraine for constructive geographical needs, development of the principles of their rational use and protection.

HROMKO LILIIA SERHIIVNA - PhD in Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: behavioral economics; human resources management; activity planning; marketing.

YERKO IRYNA VOLODYMYRIVNA - PhD in Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry, Deputy Dean for Educational, Methodological and International Activities. Research interests: hotel and restaurant industry of Ukraine and the world; animation activities in tourism; tourism development of united territorial communities; inclusive tourism; tourist infrastructure.

ILINA OLHA VIKTORIVNA - PhD in Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry, expert of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Kivetsivskyi National Nature Park "Tsumanska Pushcha", school tourism instructor, leader of tourist groups. Author of more than 200 scientific and educational works. Research interests: assessment of natural recreational and tourist resources; comprehensive study of waterlogged landscapes; organo-mineral resources and prospects for their use in the sanatorium and resort industry.

LYSIUK TETIANA VASILIVNA - PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Author of more than 100 scientific and educational works (textbooks, manuals, methodological recommendations, test tasks for entrants, professional publications, etc.). Head of the problem group on the topic: "State and prospects of the development of excursion activity in Ukraine"; head of student research projects. Her research activities are related to the study of the peculiarities of the current state of training of specialists for the tourism industry. The main attention is paid to the introduction of an interactive model of conducting classes in the educational process during the study of courses: "Organization of tourist trips", "Excursion and museum studies", "Innovative technologies in tourism, hotel and restaurant business".

TERESHCHUK OKSANA STEPANIVNA - PhD in Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: international tourism; market of tourist services; management of tourism and hotel and restaurant business; international tourism business; management of tourism and hotel and restaurant business.

BEZSMERTNIUK TARAS PETROVYCH - PhD in Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: recreational geography; recreational nature management; natural and anthropogenic recreational and tourist resources; tourist and recreational use of territories and objects of the nature reserve fund; tourist country studies.

HRYNASIUK ANASTASIA RUSLANIVNA - PhD in Geographical Sciences, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: inclusive tourism; organization of active tourism; amateur tourism; information systems and technologies in tourism and hotel and restaurant business.

PASICHNYK MYKHAILO PETROVYCH - Doctor of Philosophy, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: recreational limnology, lake science; constructive geography; recreational and tourist infrastructure; philosophy of hospitality in the Ukrainian tourism space; restaurant management, ethnic cuisine.

HOLOD OLENA MYKOLAIVNA - senior laboratory assistant at the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry. Research interests: territorial differentiation, evaluation, rational use of socio-historical recreational and tourist resources of Volyn region.

Students have the opportunity to study free of charge under the “Double Diploma” program in accordance with the agreements between Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University and Jan Dlugosz University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Czestochowa (Republic of Poland) in the specialty 242 "Tourism" (from 2018) and 241 "Hotel and Restaurant Business" (from 2020).

The Educational, Research and Production Complex was created at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, consisting of: Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and the Separate Structural Subdivision "Professional College of Technology, Business and Law of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University". This contributes to the effective use of the material and technical base of the complex participants, scientific and pedagogical staff, the acquisition of special professional competencies by students, proper training of specialists in the specialties 241 "Hotel and Restaurant Business" and 242 "Tourism" of the field of knowledge 24 "Hospitality Industry", and the implementation of the Sectoral Standard of Higher Education of Ukraine. The training laboratory of hotel and restaurant service organization "Svitlytsia" (headed by M. Pasichnyk) has been functioning. Of great importance for practical training is the educational and production complex "Gart" functioning as a part of the Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry and the practice base on Lake Svityaz.

Over the years, the Department has defended one doctoral (L. Ilyin) and four PhD (D. Kalinovsky, A. Hrynasiuk, T. Bezsmertniuk, O. Gromyk) dissertations. Students are actively involved in research work, covering the results of their own research in scientific publications, participating in competitions and contests of student research papers.

The Department has study circles and problem groups of recreational and tourist orientation. In 2007, the Meridian Travel Club was created to develop tourism among students and gain practical experience in travel organization, promote healthy lifestyles, facilitate meaningful leisure, ecological and patriotic education, comprehensive harmonious development and other activities. During hikes and excursions, students get acquainted with recreational and tourist regions of Ukraine and foreign countries. Students participate in sports hikes, international and national tourism conferences, salons and exhibitions, competitions and contests.

During the study natural-scientific, professional-oriented and production practice sessions, students get acquainted with the most developed recreational and tourist regions of Ukraine and foreign countries. Students undergo practical training at enterprises, institutions and organizations of tourism, hotel and restaurant industry in Lutsk and Volyn region. According to the agreements, production practices are held in Turkey (travel companies ANEX TOUR, CALYPSOTOUR), Bulgaria (recruitment company STAFFORENT) and Republic of Poland. During the production practices, students perform professional duties of managers, marketers, hotel receptionists, instructors, guides, animators, guide-interpreters, analysts, etc. at the enterprises of the tourist and recreational complex of the Western region of Ukraine and foreign countries, including sanatoriums, tourist and hotel complexes, travel and excursion agencies, advertising and information centers, resort and tourist associations, catering establishments. 

An important indicator of the quality of training of specialists at the Department is their successful career. Over the entire period of its existence, the Department has given a ticket to life to a significant number of talented graduates. Graduates of the Department have achieved significant success in science and production. Many of them have found their vocation in business, working in hotel and restaurant establishments and travel companies, while others, on the contrary, have chosen careers as teachers and researchers. Graduates of the Department work at enterprises and companies in Ukraine, as well as in the near and far abroad. There are also graduates of the Department who have successfully started their own business and are now implementing interesting business projects in the field of tourism, hotel and restaurant business and other spheres of activity.

The Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry of the Faculty of Geography of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University is planning to increase its scientific potential, to deepen the started directions of theoretical and methodological research and to select new ones, to prepare textbooks, manuals, monographs, methodological recommendations, to introduce modern information technologies into the educational process, to expand cooperation with centers of professional education, to exchange scientific and educational experience, to organize joint conferences, seminars that integrate scientific, methodological and educational activities in Ukraine in the field of tourism and hotel and restaurant business.
