The Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism, and Recreation is a structural unit of the Faculty of Geography at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. Its history dates back to June 26, 2008. In 2010, it was renamed the Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, and in 2024, it received its current name – the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism, and Recreation.

The department prepares students in accordance with the concept of tiered higher education, educational and qualification characteristics, educational and professional programs, and curricula for the specialties J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Business and Catering» and J3 «Tourism and Recreation» within the knowledge domain J «Transport and Services» at the Bachelor's and Master's levels.

The department's mission is to train qualified specialists capable of ensuring the development of the tourism, recreation, and hospitality industries. Its goal is to promote the effective use of human resources in the recreational-tourism and hospitality sectors, enhance professional and social mobility, and foster the structural and technological transformation of the industry. The department also focuses on shaping creative, socially active, and spiritually enriched individuals, taking into account societal and state needs. 

The team’s mission includes improving the methodological support of the educational process in accordance with the standards of the European Higher Education Area and fostering scientific and educational international collaborations. Recreational-tourism issues, as well as the development of the hotel business, restaurant business, catering, and other aspects of the hospitality industry, are priority areas of the department’s research activities.

ILYIN LEONID VOLODYMYROVYCH – Head of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism, and Recreation, Professor, Honored Educator of Ukraine, member of the Scientific Council on Tourism and Resorts under the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, Expert of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, expert of the State Service of Education Quality of Ukraine, Editor-in-Chief of the professional scientific journal Geographical Journal of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, member of editorial boards of national and international scientific journals and collections, and author of over 300 scientific and educational-methodological works, including textbooks, study guides, dictionaries, reference books, encyclopedic publications, monographs, and entrance exam test materials.Head of the scientific school of General and Regional Limnology and has pioneered new directions in constructive geography– ecological limnology and constructive limnology. He has supervised three candidates of sciences and one Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Research focuses on the assessment of natural recreational and tourism resources, comprehensive studies of natural (lakes) and artificial (reservoirs, ponds) water bodies in Ukraine for constructive-geographical applications, and the development of principles for their rational use and conservation.

HROMKO LILIIA SERHIIVNA - Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation. Research interests: behavioral economics, human resource management, activity planning, marketing.

YERKO IRYNA VOLODYMYRIVNA - Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation, Deputy Dean for Academic, Methodological, and International Activities. Research interests: hotel and restaurant business in Ukraine and the world, animation activities in tourism, development of tourism in territorial communities, inclusive tourism, tourism infrastructure.

 

ILYINA OLHA VIKTORIVNA - Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism, and Recreation, member of the Scientific and Technical Council of Tsumanska Pushcha National Nature Park, expert of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance, expert of the State Service of Education Quality of Ukraine, school tourism instructor, and leader of tourist groups. She is the author of over 250 scientific and educational-methodological works. Research interests: assessment of natural recreational-tourism resources, comprehensive study of waterlogged landscapes, organo-mineral resources and their prospects for use in health and wellness industries.

LYSIUK TETIANA VASILIVNA - Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation. Author of over 100 scientific and educational publications, including textbooks, teaching aids, methodological recommendations, entrance test materials, and specialized articles. Her research focuses on the current state and specifics of training specialists for the tourism industry.

TERESHCHUK OKSANA STEPANIVNA - Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation. Expert of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance. Research interests: international tourism, tourism service market, tourism and hospitality management, international tourism business, management 

BEZSMERTNIUK TARAS PETROVYCH - Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation. Research interests: recreational geography, recreational land use, natural-anthropogenic recreational-tourism resources, tourism and recreational use of territories and objects of the nature reserve fund, tourism geography.

PASICHNYK MYKHAILO PETROVYCH - Associate Professor of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Research interests: recreational limnology, limnology, philosophy of hospitality in the Ukrainian tourism space, organization of restaurant business, ethnic cuisines.

HOLOD OLENA MYKOLAIVNA - Senior Laboratory Assistant of the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism and Recreation. Research interests: territorial differentiation, evaluation, and rational use of socio-historical recreational-tourism resources in Volyn Oblast.

The department trains specialists at the first (bachelor's) and second (master's) levels of higher education in the specialties J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Management, and Catering» and J3 «Tourism and Recreation» in the field of knowledge J «Transport and Services».

Bachelor's Degree:

J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Management, and Catering». Educational qualification: «Bachelor in Hospitality and Restaurant Management».

J3 «Tourism and Recreation». Educational qualification:  «Bachelor in Tourism and Recreation».

Master's Degree:

J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Management, and Catering». Educational qualification: «Master in Hospitality and Restaurant Management».

J3 «Tourism and Recreation». Educational qualification: «Master in Tourism and Recreation».

Students have the opportunity to study for free under the «Double Diploma» program, based on agreements between Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and Jan Dlugosz University of Humanities and Natural Sciences in Częstochowa (Republic of Poland), in the specialty J3 «Tourism and Recreation» (since 2018) and J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Management, and Catering» (since 2020).

An Educational-Scientific-Industrial Complex has been established at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, comprising Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University and its separate structural unit, the Professional College of Technology, Business, and Law. This integration ensures the effective utilization of the material and technical resources of the complex participants, the expertise of scientific and pedagogical staff, the acquisition of specialized professional competencies by students, and the proper training of specialists in the fields of J2 «Hospitality, Restaurant Business, and Catering» and J3 «Tourism and Recreation» under the knowledge domain J «Transport and Services», in compliance with the Higher Education Standard of Ukraine.

The following training laboratories are in operation:

– Educational-Scientific Laboratory of Restaurant Service and Bartending;

– Training Laboratory for Hotel and Restaurant Service «Svitlytsia»;

– Training and Production Complex «Hart»;

– Educational-Scientific-Industrial Complex at Lesya Ukrainka VNU.

The «Hart» Training and Production Complex, within the Department of Tourism and Hospitality, along with the training base on Lake Svitiaz, plays a crucial role in students’ practical training.

Over the years of the department's existence, one doctoral dissertation (L.V. Ilyin), four candidate dissertations (D.I. Kalinovskyi, A.R. Hrynasiuk, T.P. Bezsmertniuk, O.M. Hromyk), and one dissertation for the Doctor of Philosophy (Pasichnyk M.P.) degree have been defended. Students are actively involved in research activities, presenting the results of their own studies in scientific publications and participating in Olympiads and competitions of student scientific works.

An important indicator of the quality of training specialists at the department is their successful careers. Throughout its existence, the department has launched a significant number of talented graduates into the world. Graduates of the department have achieved notable success in science and industry. Many of them have found their calling in business, working in hotel and restaurant establishments, as well as tourism companies, while others have, on the contrary, chosen careers as teachers and research scientists.

Graduates of the department work at enterprises and companies both in Ukraine and abroad, in neighboring and distant countries. Among the graduates of the department, there are those who have successfully started their own businesses and are now carrying out interesting business projects in tourism, hotel and restaurant management, and other areas of activity.

Whatever professional path our graduates choose, the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Business, Tourism, and Recreation at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University will forever remain a bright start in their lives!
