Polish language study at the University began in 1992. Hanna Karashchuk, Olena Mykhailevych, Tetyana Yanytska provided the educational process. Later the first graduates Yuliia Vaseiko, Nataliia Tsolyk, Olena Trubnikova and others started to teach Polish at the Faculty. In the early 2000s, the Department of Polish Philology was established and it was reorganized in 2011 into the Department of Slavic Philology, headed by Doctor of Philology (1993), Professor (1993), Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Luiza Oliander. Such lecturers as Oksana Vyshnevska, Yuliia Vaseiko, Hanna Karashchuk, Andrii Moklytsia, Olha Yaruchyk, Viktoriia Ostapchuk, Nataliia Kasianchuk etc are providing classes.
In connection with the active development of Polish studies in two main areas — 014 Secondary education and 035 Philology — and the need to establish a school of Ukrainian-Polish translation, in December 2020 the Academic Council of Lesia Ukrainka Volyn National University decided to reorganize the department of Slavic Philology into the Department of Polish Philology and Translation. From April 1, 2021 the department is headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor Sukhareva Svitlana Volodymyrivna.
