Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University

The Preparatory Department developed alongside the Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. It was established on December 1, 1969, to assist individuals who, due to life circumstances, could not enter higher education institutions immediately after completing secondary school but did so after a period of time. Each year, more than 100 students undertook an in-depth study of the secondary school curriculum and were admitted to such programs as Physics, Mathematics, Ukrainian Language and Literature, History, and others without entrance examinations.

Associate Professor of the Department of Physics, Zinovii Volodymyrovych Pankevych, was appointed as the Dean of the structural unit. Teaching positions were filled through a competitive selection process. In July, preparatory courses were offered for prospective students. According to the report on student admissions to Lutsk State Pedagogical Institute as of 1975, 120 individuals from the Preparatory Department were admitted, including 67 without competition (from remote areas) (DAVO, F. R-376, op. 7, d. 339).

The "Applicant" Division at Lesya Ukrainka Lutsk Pedagogical Institute was established on November 3, 1980, to select school youth with a calling for the teaching profession. Over 500 students from grades 9–10 of general secondary schools studied annually in evening and correspondence formats.

In 1991, Rostyslav Oleksandrovych Pozinkevych was elected as Dean of the Faculty of Pre-University Preparation for Youth. In 2007, Oleksandr Serhiiovych Semenov was appointed Dean, followed by Petro Mykolaiovych Husak in 2008, and Oleksandr Anatoliiovych Zhuravliov in 2009. From 2010 to 2020, the Dean was Yevheniia Arystarkhivna Durmanenko. In 2020, Mykola Volodymyrovych Suriak was appointed Head of the Preparatory Department, and in 2024, the unit was headed by Nataliia Serhiivna Petrushko.

The Preparatory Department is an integral part of the organizational, educational, and scientific structure of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University. Its operation focuses on ensuring high-quality preparation for prospective students to successfully pass the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT), complete creative competitions, and more. This unit carries out its activities through an in-depth study of key academic disciplines, in line with the standardized testing programs and requirements (2019).

The primary goal of the Preparatory Department is to create optimal conditions for enhancing the educational level of citizens and ensuring their competitiveness during the admission process to the University and other institutions of higher education. Simultaneously, the department serves as a platform for the effective selection of talented youth, offering them the opportunity to realize their potential through further studies at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University.

A significant aspect of the department's work is the integration of future students into the University’s academic environment. This includes adapting to the learning conditions of higher education, developing independent study skills, fostering critical thinking, and mastering methods of scientific inquiry. The University’s teaching staff emphasizes an individualized approach to each student, creating conditions for their comprehensive development.

The Preparatory Department of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University organizes tournaments, Olympiads, and intellectual competitions, engaging school students and specialized faculties/institutes of the University.

The Preparatory Department also provides education for foreigners and stateless individuals, facilitating their adaptation to the educational process in Ukraine and their subsequent admission to the University for higher education. While studying at the Preparatory Department, international students have the opportunity to learn the Ukrainian language, deepen their knowledge of core academic disciplines, and adapt to the educational, sociocultural, and everyday conditions of life in Ukraine.

In addition to its educational goals, the department’s activities focus on integrating international students into the student and university community, fostering intercultural dialogue and cultural enrichment. Through these efforts, the University not only expands its international presence but also promotes tolerance and openness within the student body.

Material and Technical Base

The Preparatory Department is located in the main building of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University at 13 Voli Avenue, Room 101. To ensure a high-quality educational process, the department has access to several lecture and training rooms equipped with essential technology and teaching materials. The University's library is also available to students.

Particular attention is given to the use of modern information and communication technologies in education. The department’s computer network is connected to the Internet, enabling students to quickly access the latest information, electronic resources, educational platforms, and other knowledge sources.

About the Program
The preparatory courses for foreign citizens and stateless persons are designed to help prospective students adapt to studying in Ukraine. We offer intensive Ukrainian language courses and basic preparation in core disciplines (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, Ukrainian history, and geography) depending on the chosen field of study.
